Wanted to add my 2 cents here to get things up and running again.  I'm
running on the following:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM
Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02)

I've 'upgraded' with the GTT Incoherency Patch since video kept
crashing, but now I'm randomly getting the same problem listed at the
start - the title bars spontaneously disappear.  The problem can be
fixed by going into Appearance and changing it from none to anything
else (it takes a while to search for drivers each time), but this is
only temporary - eventually it just disappears again.

No idea if this is useful in terms of this behaviour helping to solve
the problem, but when the problem occurs full screen mode on Chrome
doesn't work, any programs open at the time of the problem will remain
in the bottom bar independent of whether you've closed them, and the
virtual desktop becomes unusable.
