The fact that there was "no activity" doesn't mean that the problem "expired" too. Just now gedit and archive manager shows
this behaviour. After choosing them via alt-tab I was able to access their menu, but not screen area.
The screen area  was occumied by  gnome-terminal, in which I was able to type commands.
