>From expo mode (super+S), you should be able to start an application in the workspace that is selected using the launcher bar, ie upper-left WS is selected, you open nautilus in it by clicking on the nautilus icon on the bar, then you select bottom-left WS and you should be able to open for example a terminal in that one using the launcher bar icon.
However, this process is very buggy, it sometimes works sometimes not: very often, when I select another WS with the mouse (WS is highlighted no problem) the window opens in the first WS anyway, it is repeatedly so with all applications on all WS's; but sometimes, it works fine and the window opens in the selected WS as it should... I could not identify a logic underneath this bug. It seems to happen less often when I switch selected WS using the keyboard arrows, but it does happen sometimes so too.
Also, when "opening a window in the newly selected WS" does not work, the focus arrows next to launcher icons on unity bar show that we are still on the previously selected WS.
So basically, it seems the workspace switching using left click or the keyboard arrows in expo mode sometimes works sometimes not, whereas the intended WS is definitely highlighted after the mouse click or arrow-key pressing...
This is quite a usability bug.
