The problem seems to get much worse at times with everything
disappearing from the screen every 3-5 mins . I've not as yet noticed
any correlation between the apps i'm running and the problem, though if
I have a terminal window, the chromium browser, Ninja IDE and Ipython
running it seems to get worse. I've 8 gig ram an AMD 3400 quad core CPU
and a radeon HD 6450 2.1 pci-e graphic card with 2 gig ram.

The latest drivers as noted above have solved some graphic issues. The
problem with compiz sames to have started after i had turned on some
animation for menus , windows and such.
