[Bug 1251812] [NEW] search app displays odd video patterns or crashes desktop on launch

Public bug reported:

"ubuntu-bug -w" identified compiz as the related package, but the
problem only exists when clicking the search app icon in the launcher.

When I attempt to use the search app in the launcher, I expect a window
to open with a search box. Instead, the desktop freezes and crashes
oftentimes when I click the icon. Sometimes it instead doesn't display a
window but there will instead be some graphical glitch, such as a red,
green, and blue pattern at the top edge of the screen.

I am using a Lenovo Thinkpad T61. The same bug occurred on this hardware
using 13.04 and continued since upgrading to 13.10.
