Title:
Empathy doesn't work well after update; user should be warned
Status in “empathy” package in Ubuntu:
Expired
Bug description:
Binary package hint: empathy
After Empathy was updated the other day (to 2.32.1-0ubuntu1), I found
that some operations, such as importing accounts from Pidgin, failed
to work. Similarly, I could not create a new Facebook Chat account.
In both cases, there was no error, simply a silent failure: in the
case of importing the accounts, having selected the accounts to import
and clicked "Import" nothing happened; whereas when I tried to create
a new account, nothing happened when I clicked on "Login".
Having logged out and back in, everything worked as normal.
I also installed telepathy-gabble (for Jabber & hence Facebook
support) while Empathy was running.
So, it seems that either a) installing protocols while Empathy is
running or b) updating Empathy while it is running causes problems.
Of course, I did try restarting Empathy, but this does not restart
everything.
Some other programs, like Firefox, do not work properly if they are
updated while running, but they at least print a warning. It would be
good if Empathy at least did this, and of course even better if it
could be fixed.
