[Bug 1421924] [NEW] Unable to successfully install NVidia drivers (machine doesn't successfully restart)

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1401591 ***
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1401591

Public bug reported:

Trying to install the tested NVidia drivers and after restart the
machine, the machine quickly started slowing after the log in screen was
shown.

The machine is still responsive over SSH and htop showed that Xorg (and
occasionally compiz) were taking 100% of 2 cores for several minutes.
The machine was recovered by `apt-get purge nvidia-*`, which reported a
failure for some of the packages. It's possible that the upgrade from
14.04 to 14.10 is the source of the issue as I'm not sure that
VirtualBox was successfully upgraded.
