Title:
Cannot connect to PPPoE using NetworkManager: Could not find pppoe
  binary.

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
TL;DR: NetworkManager requires "pppoe" package, which was not
installed by default in Lubuntu 15.04.

I tried using Network Manager (nm-applet) to configure a PPPoE connection. I can create the connection, but trying to connect to it fails.

The erro message that shows up in a dialog is not helpful at all:

  (1) Creating object for path
  '/org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/ActiveConnection/23' failed in libnm-
  glib.

What is helpful is a message buried in /var/log/syslog:

NetworkManager[713]: <warn> (eth0): PPPoE failed to start: Could not find pppoe binary.

  Workaround: apt-get install pppoe.

Desirable solution: pppoe package being a dependency of another
package (lubuntu-desktop seems like a good one).

Using Lubuntu 15.04 (upgraded from previous versions). This is the first time configuring a DSL/PPPoE connection in this system.
