This bug was fixed in the package xchat-gnome -

  * debian/patches/110-fix-fd-leak.patch: fix a file handle leak.

Status in GNOME frontend to the popular xchat IRC client:

Status in “xchat-gnome” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  xchat-gnome keeps crashing or just not working when open for a few
  weeks at a time cause it uses up all it's 1024 file handles.

  This patch seems to fix the issue.

  This is still an issue in the trunk version.
