Your're right, I missed the "treestyletab" reference above, sorry about the noise.

  Since a few days, trying to add a new bookmark now reproducibly leads
  to the following on the console:

  Installed packages: firefox{,-locale-de,-locale-en,-locale-fr} 40.0+build4-0ubuntu0.14.04.4 (updated yesterday from the previous version, i.e., the problem is not necessarily tied to this very version).
  sqlite3 does not complain about places.sqlite, closing down FF and "vacuuming" did not change anything, SQL dump looks good.
