[Bug 607189] Re: pidgin should not override away mode with a lesser one on auto-away
Thanks for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. Sorry we
don't always have the resources to get to every bug report. Ubuntu 10.04
is no longer supported so I'm going to close the bug.
It also sounds like it was on it's way to being fixed.

Title:
pidgin should not override away mode with a lesser one on auto-away
Status in pidgin package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
Binary package hint: pidgin
I've observed that pidgin blindly sets the auto-away mode as
specified, regardless of the current state; an example being that it
sets the Away status after the specified time even when current status
is Extended Away
Why it is wrong?
Because auto-away is meant to automatically change online status to away; when changing to Away from Extended Away it actually lessens the status of being away, contrary to the original purpose.
What should happen instead?
Pidgin should detect higher Away modes like Extended, and prevent changing the mode on Auto Away, unless the AA is configured to set a higher state (e.g. Auto Away sets Extended Away, and the current state is Away or Online.)
