Should pretty much be fixed in 0.9.0-0ubuntu2. It will show with an
icon, and switch automatically between indicator and gtkstatusicon when
necessary.

However, you will still be able to open multiple instances if you re-run
it, and this is expected; as there needs to be a way to create new
instances of nm-applet per user.

  After upgrade to Oneiric I have 2 nm-applet's in my notification area (both without icons - see bug #823852)
  It can be easily started again (3rd copy) from console:
