Message #22027
[Bug 856848] [NEW] After installing and removing proprietary drivers for Radeon cards, desktop environments do not load.
Public bug reported:
I've done this twice today.
I have a clean install of Oneiric with all updates as of today. I have a
Radeon HD5850 card and the open drivers works perfectly out of the box,
but I was recommended to install the proprietary ones all the same. So I
gave it a go, and found that they were not anywhere near as good as the
open ones, but caused lots of issues and were slower. So I removed them,
and now when I log in, I won't get Unity or Unity 2D, though the desktop
seems to be working properly.
So I installed Xfce4-panel and it works well and its session menu tells
me I'm not running a session manager. So I thought something might have
been automatically removed when I removed the proprietary drivers, and
attempted to install ubuntu-desktop, but it was already the newest
version.
** Affects: jockey (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: New
