Thank you for your bug report, same question as bug #870019, the default
is "never" in the current version. Do you work on ac or battery? Do you
see the default in the ui or did it suspend not respecting the ui
choice?

  suspend on idle should not be enabled by default on upgrades

Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  I upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10. On upgrade suspend on idle was turned
  on by default. I was not told about the change in behavior and this
  resulted in remote backups not working (since the computer was down).
  At the very least this should be documented so the user knows.
  Ideally, upgrades should preserve the previously configured behavior.
