Message #30919
[Bug 395836] Re: Login sound is too loud and disruptive on first boot
In Oneiric this seems to go in the wrong direction, i.e. it seems to be more difficult for those (most users?) who don't like the login sound to figure out how to disable it. In an attempt to prevent that, I posted a message to the ubuntu-desktop mailing list:

Your contributions to that thread might make a difference. ;-)

Title:
Login sound is too loud and disruptive on first boot
Status in “libcanberra” package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
after installing the OS the welcome chime is to loud, (I look for mute
frantically)
I think the welcome tune should be shortened and made to be 1/2 the
volume. Also it would be helpful if the default volume level was not
set to MAX on first boot. (my speaker system is loud) and this is
disruptive in the public / classroom.
