[Bug 873760] Re: Oneiric 11.10 NVidia Proprietary Drivers Uninstallation Bug

I am not sure wether the problem lies on package "jockey-gtk" or on the
NVidia-version-current-updates proprietary package.

For all I know this problem must originate from step 3. Here's why:

Temporary Solution

Reinstalling and then uninstalling Recommended NVidia drivers, that is:

7) After step 6, from additional drivers, select "NVidia-version-current" and press "Activate"
8) Restart your system
9) From additional drivers, select "NVidia-version-current" and press "Remove"
10) Restart your system

Assuming the solution above works (it did for me), it is only reasonable
to assume that the problem lies on step 3. When choosing to activate
"NVidia-version-current-updates", "NVidia-version-current" is obviously
deactivated. But when "NVidia-version-current-updates" is later on
deactivated, the system should return to its factory settings.

Possible Causes

A) Choosing to ACTIVATE "NVidia-version-current-updates" does not
properly deactivate "NVidia-version-current". So, when "NVidia-
version-current-updates" is properly deactivated, the system can't
return to its initial state.

B) Choosing to DEACTIVATE "NVidia-version-current-updates" does not
properly deactivate itself.

Title:
Oneiric 11.10 NVidia Proprietary Drivers Uninstallation Bug

Status in “jockey” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Just upgraded to Oneiric 11.10.

After installing and then unistalling NVidia proprietary drivers on my
machine (Dell XPS 502x), Unity 3D could not be booted, and the system
fell back to Unity 2D after login.

  Bug Reproduction

  1) From additional drivers, select "NVidia-version-current" and press "Activate".
  2) Restart system (optional - skip to save time)
  3) From additional drivers, select "NVidia-version-current-updates" and press "Activate"
  4) Restart system
  5) From additional drivers, select "NVidia-version-current-updates" and press "Remove"
  6) Restart system

Now, normally, after step 6, my computer should return to its factory
condition (Unity 3D worked just fine after upgrading to 11.10).
Instead, the system boots to Unity 2D, although at login I made sure
"Ubuntu" was selected (instead of "Ubuntu 2D").
