Title:
gtkfilechooser is inconsistent and unusable, needs proper image
  preview

Status in “gtk+2.0” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
gtkfilechooser shows inconsistent behaviour when it comes to image
  previews.

  1. When uploading an image to an imagehost and/or opening an image
with an image editing application, the file chooser dialog box _shows_
previews on the right side of the upload/open box. The problem --
making multiple choices is a horrendous task, because then you have to
  rely on micro thumbnails.

  2. When uploading an image to a regular host and/or opening it with a
random application, the file chooser dialog box doesn't show any
preview at all. In that case, all you have to rely on are the micro
  thumbnails, which are practically unusable.

I have attached a screenshot which shows the behavior in both
situations. While the first situation is slightly easier to deal with,
  it still is practically unusable.

Suggested soltuon: Allow users to manually change the thumbnail size
or view options, like they can in Nautilus.

I apologize if this is not the right place to be posting this bug, but
this is a serious usability bug, and it's been there for ages, with no
one paying any attention to it. So if someone could point me to a
solution (other than using KDE which doesn't have this issues I
think), I'd be grateful, or if a developer saw this, even better.
