Title:
  Evince frequently replaces "pi" glyphs with "not equal to" and other
  substitutions.

Status in “poppler” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: evince

  I see this in so many PDFs. 2≠ instead of 2π.

  This and other substitutions (μ -> alpha, ∆ -> O with a line through
  it) make many scientific papers completely unreadable.

  Interesting to note that copying and pasting these rogue glyphs does
  in fact give you the right character.

  XPDF has no such issues with exactly the same PDFs. I can upload an
  example if you want but it's really not hard to find.
