Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be
reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the stable
release - Oneiric Ocelot. It would help us greatly if you could test
with it so we can work on getting it fixed. You can find out more about

  the selection box on the desktop does not appear

Status in “gnome-session” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-session

  When clicking and dragging on the desktop the selection box does not
  appear. Also right-clicking and creating new files works but the files
  do not show up on the desktop. The files can be seen in nautilus. I
  believe that everything is working but certain things are not being
  drawn on the desktop.
