[Bug 660917] Re: Screen brightness adjustment does not change at all on my Acer Aspire Timeline 5810TZ

I just installed Oneiric Ocelot and this issue is still present. NOTHING
I do changes the brightness. (I don't know how find a conf file and
change the brightness variable, because I shouldn't have to)

This has been the same ever since 10.04. Back in 9.10 I could change the
brightness using the function keys, so you drop support for hardware
that was less than a year old at the time? WHY???

Even installing Ubuntu Tweak on every release and trying to adjust the
brightness in there for charching and battary modes. NOTHING changes it.

I am not a programmer or a tech kind of guy. I wish I could help find
and fix the issue. But I only started using Ubuntu 9.10 cause I was
googling for a way to fix an old machine that stopped recognizing the
DVD drive (under Windows) . Installing Ubuntu fixed this issue
completely and no matter what machine I put Ubuntu 9.10 on it worked
beautifully with full support and everything just worked. So not only is
Ubuntu's releases getting uglier (HATE purple) Its dropping support for
hardware??

Title:
Screen brightness adjustment does not change at all on my Acer Aspire
  Timeline 5810TZ

Status in “gnome-power-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I have tried both going into the system preferences and using the
hardware adjustment ( function key + the left or right arrow key ) It
used to work on the older Ubuntu 9.10 version. Please stop dropping
the drivers for hardware. Especially for hardware that is barely older
than 1 year. I am currently on 10.10 if that is not in the report. If
Linux is to gain ground hardware support is crucial. And things like
screen brightness is basic, much less printers, webcams, and other
peripherals. I am not a advanced user at all. I am just a previous
basic windows user trying to both switch to and support Linux.

     Thank you and God Bless,
         Daniel Clem
