[Bug 882128] [NEW] upgrade to Ubuntu 11.10 has lost previous wallpapaer and layout settings and will drive my wife nuts

Public bug reported:

After unsuccessfully trying to get Java installed for use with Firefox -
unsuccessful because the method is far too complicated to be done
quickly - I checked for updates and found Ubuntu 11:10 waiting. This
has a significantly different screen layout by having the "toolbar" down
the left, losing some of the links from the top toolbar, having no
taskbar at the bottom of the screen, and making the previous wallpaper
unobtainable. I can't find how to restore previous appearance, layout,
etc. Open windows have only 3 buttons in top right corner WITH NO
DISTINGUISHING INDICATION OF Minimise, Close Window, etc. I know this
is supposed to be bug reporting, but it is the first feedback option I
could find. Ubuntu 11:10 needs sorting to allow familiar features to be
retained when a user has set up their computer for their convenience.
