Message #44693
[Bug 884775] [NEW] crashing desktop locks console/screen
Public bug reported:
Hi,
my unity desktop keeps continuosly crashing and hanging (because of bug
#861643 which falsely claims to have been fixed). When this happened,
there is no way out except logging in over the network from a different
computer and restarting lightdm.
Once uppon a time, there were good methods in Linux, and even in Ubuntu,
to cope with that, using Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to kill X11 or Ctrl-Alt-F1
to switch to the text console.
For some unknown reason (or for making user's life more difficult and
complicated) someone has turned these emergency keys off in Ubuntu. So
the Ubuntu is unstable and locking the machine without leaving any
escape.
This is unacceptable, especially for productive use.
If you're not getting this damned unity into a stable state, then at
least leave the emergency exits open.
