screen suddenly went brown tinged colour and a bright brown box appeared
surrounding the window. this colour normally appears when moving a
window to the global menu to dock it. however, i was not attempting to
dock anything.

colour could not be removed, but disappeared when i opened terminal and
resized the window to report this bug.
