Message #56768
[Bug 900791] Re: Add printer takes too long (users cancel before completing)
In which situation does it happen? And with which printer setup tool?
With which printer? Note that if you are using Unity, you will get
system-config-printer as printer setup tool and if you are using gnome-
shell you get the new tool of GNOME 3.
system-config-printer is capable of calling Jockey to download drivers
for locally unsupported printers from OpenPrinting. The mentioned delay
and the bouncing/progress bar window can be from Jockey polling
OpenPrinting to find a driver. If you choose a detected printer in the
first step of the wizard and click "Forward" a driver will be searched
for, first locally and in case of failure from OpenPrinting through
Jockey. This takes some time until you get presented with the
confirmation window from Jockey (if driver got found) or with the manual
make/model selection (if no driver got found).
So the problem can also be in Jockey needing improvement on the wait
dialogs and in the OpenPrinting web server needing to be faster to
answer requests.
** Also affects: jockey (Ubuntu)

Add printer takes too long (users cancel before completing)

Bug description:
Watching a new user install a Network printer takes too long. A
progress bar is shown, and continues to beat back and forth, but the
operation takes so long that the user ends up cancelling the process.
One month early I watched another user do precisely the same
cancellation at the same point while adding the same network printer
on the same network.
Ideally the progress could be changed from a bouncing bar, to a
progressing bar. This would give a sense of competition, that is
lacking in the bouncing bar.
It would probably even be tolerable to have a completion bar that
times at the end. This would replace an unknown with a known.
