Title:
empathy does not recognize ppp connections

Status in Chat app, and Telepathy user interface:
  New
Status in “empathy” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: empathy

Empathy will not attempt to connect to accounts in Karmic if the
computer's network connection is a ppp connection, such as a
blackberry tether. Empathy likely only recognizes network
connections that are valid in network manager, which I believe is a
  bug.
