[Bug 1380095] Re: Gnome Fallback[s] don't work in 14.04. Work once ONLY if reinstalled
1. gnome-session-fallback is build from gnome-panel source code that is why your computer is saying problem is with gnome-panel.
2. reinstalling gnome-session-fallback should not solve anything. It is transitional package and does not contain anyting. Problem is somewhere else. This package can be removed.
3. GNOME Fallback is now called GNOME Flashback.
Have you tried to re-select session from login screen? GNOME Flashback
(Metacity) and/or GNOME Flashback (Compiz). Maybe there is some problems
upgrading from 12.04 to 14.04.
Are you using extra ppa? In tags there is gnome3-ppa. Not sure, but this
might cause problems if there is installed newer GNOME components.
Can you right click on desktop? Is nautilus autostarted or you are
getting completly empty screen.
Can you attach extra log file? I would like to see ~/.cache/upstart
/gnome-session-Unity.log. After you fail to login, restart PC and then
login in GNOME session (not in Unity), then attach asked file. Yes, I
need gnome-session-Unity.log, don't ask why.

Title:
Gnome Fallback[s] don't work in 14.04. Work once ONLY if reinstalled
Status in “gnome-panel” package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
While the computer is saying its a problem with gnome-panel, I keep
re-installing gnome-session-fallback. It will work [in either flavor
of fallback (no idea why there are now two!) ONE TIME - but the next
time I get a screen with NO panels and NO keyboard shortcuts are
recognized (so I can't even get a terminal). All I can do is hard
shut-down of computer; restart into gnome or unity or some others
(which I do NOT like to use!). I have done this MANY times now. It
never stays 'done'. Am going back to my copy ov 12.04 until someone
can tell me why or how to make one of the fallbacks (hopefully both)
work every time I sign in to 14.04. Thank you. Anyone else having
similar problems? The only other thing I can think of is that I
upgraded from 12.04 in which fallback operated just fine and was
stable.
