[Bug 1396762] [NEW] 331 updates installed after x session failed to launch. Was built against previous kernel version

Public bug reported:

I have an old twin Xeon (2 physical CPU) box running via an Nvidia 260 into a 40" TV using HDMI.
It's a media centre.
Yesterday there was a repeated failure to launch.
>From CLI I installed 331-updates (Wasn't sure what -current would give me), and these built against yesterday's Kernel version.
After stock updates installed today, 331-updates snagged due to the new Kernel.
I could reinstall 331-updates which would probably fix the apport indication, but for the time being graphics is still functioning normally.
I'm told Nouveau is better than it used to be, but it's been a disappointment previously(13.10).
