[Bug 1405841] [NEW] Xorg freezes after a few hours running

Public bug reported:

Apologies if I failed to find a variant of this type of bug that relates
to my problem. There are too many hits to this Xorg error in Google.

Xorg sort of freezes after some time running, even when unused. The
mouse cursor moves, but there is not reaction to clicking, or to the
keyboard. This correlates with the error in the Xorg.0.log:

(EE) [mi] EQ overflowing. Additional events will be discarded until existing events are processed.
(Full log attached.)

No input events are processed.

The hardware has been running various Ubuntu releases without change,
right now I'm very unsure when I last upgraded the box. The Trusty ->
Utopic upgrade went awry, at least partly because it did not tell me in
advance that my root filesystem was too small at 12 GB. (/var, /tmp etc
are separate filesystems.)

So I did a fresh install and that is the one freezing. Note that it is
only the Xorg server freezing, I can SSH in and reboot. Restarting
lightdm does not cure the problem, so I believe something inside the
kernel is stuck.
