It has nothing to do with Compiz. The cause is that Adwaita has no code
to support Unity’s widgets, including the top menu bar and the window
title bars.

Bug description:
  Adwaita is a nice theme, however the window controls look out of place
  in Ubuntu 14.04 which makes it look ugly.
