After complete re-installation of Ubunut the issue is gone. It indeed looked like an issue with h264 decoder libs.
Please close the report.

Title:
YouTube Vimeo Amazon Playback broken
Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:
Fix Released
Bug description:
In Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Chromium (probably HTML5 based) video and audio playback is broken.
Vimeo: Video has no sound, runs too fast or hangs
Youtube: Video has no sound, runs too fast or hangs
Amazon: MP3 Previews not working anymore (no sound but time display correct)
System sound is working fine in all other places.
Behavior is the same when using a new user account.
When all these services where flash based, no issues where observed.
A long search around found no reason so far.
Suspect might be a video codec/decoder issue?
