Re: iReport manual

Hi
We (Caroline and me) had a discussion with an HMIS focal person in Kibaha Rural District the other day, and he didn't have a clue on how to make reports, even if he has been working with DHIS for 2 years. Guys like him, and also a bit more competent users, would be lost in iReport generation. So we should provide some guidance on when to use and NOT use this functionality. Eg, the explanation could start with something like:

If you want to make a chart with one line, like this:
... a figure of a one line chart ...'
choose Charts.
If you want more lines in your chart, like this
... your last line chart with 3 lines ...
or other more complex reports, iReports can do it for you. If you do not succeed in setting it up, please contact your DHIS support person.

This explanation can probably be made more accurate, but it is more important that such explanations are catchy than complete.

Btw, the user in Kibaha Rural got an error message when trying the button Add period chart. He was not authorized.

Yes, I know - the section on line chart explains how to make report tables that supports line charts. The point was only that I ignored the issue when writing the bar charts section, and just left it with quarters along the x-axis...

Olav,

This obviously is not the right place to discuss how to make reports and charts, but you can of course create other kinds of report tables that do not cross tab on periods, so that a single period column(in the report table) can appear as a series in a line chart.

We should cover in the user manual (I think all this belongs in the user manual and not the implementation guide) what kind of report tables are needed for the various types of charts etc.

Yes, I know the bar chart example isn't very good. The problem is
that I think a lot of the reports that are made have periods on
the crosstab dimension, and as far as I know that makes it
impossible to make a line chart - and since the bar chart is there
by default, I just ignored the whole issue...
