Could we make that 1.0~beta and 1.0~rc1? In Debian, the release of 1.0
will then sort as newer than the beta and the release candidate:

  $ dpkg --compare-versions 1.0 gt 1.0-beta; echo $?
  1
  $ dpkg --compare-versions 1.0 gt 1.0~beta; echo $?
  0
