Great. I was already thinking the 'cache' should be separated at the
"root" level, but wasn't aware there was an actual freedesktop
standard. I think it's a great idea to follow that. Random dumping of
"bulk data" into home directories in a way which isn't easily
excluded, is a pet peeve of mine :)

Yes, absolutely. There  are plenty of practical cases  where it's just
the only viable  option, especially if you want to  be friendly to the
user.

(In some ideal mythological world we'd have an API to request a
snapshot of a particular path in an fs/volume management/root perms
independent way.)
