I have been following the issue and think that this is probably the
first time this topic has come up.  It would be possible to list the
volN files, but its faster to list the sig files.  Both are sigtar
format, but the sig files are faster since they are smaller.  I'm sure
more detailed history could be obtained from the volN files themselves.

Not sure that keeping the sig files is the way to go as a default
option, and we'd run into the same problems as --archive-dir if we make
it optional.  The first run without the option and the previous sigs
would just disappear.  Sure to generate lots of complaints.
