That's happening in saucy in my current session:

- open the dash, I get an empty screen with the "no result matching the
query" string (the wording is not exact, I'm using a french locale and
doing the approximate translation)

- type something, results get listed

- type backspace a few times to clear the entry, apps get listed

<repeat>

sometimes clearly the query (either with backspace or esc)  leads to the
empty screen again
