[Bug 484415] Re: No indicator/messaging-menu support for gnome-shell

Has this been implemented yet? I can't immediately tell, but it sounds
likely to have been resolved since the bug was logged 7+ years ago.

Title:
  No indicator/messaging-menu support for gnome-shell

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
Status in indicator-applet package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-shell

If we're going to have mail-checking and instant messaging support in
gnome-shell, it'll be pretty important to have support for the
indicator/messaging-menu protocol, even if there's no "applet" support
  per se.

What if the indicator-applet could be a notification/tray icon instead
of a legacy libpanel-applet2 applet? Is there anything about the
indicator-applet that would particular preclude this from happening?

Alternatively, does this need to be re-implemented in gnome-shell
  directly?
