No indicator/messaging-menu support for gnome-shell

Bug description:
Binary package hint: gnome-shell
If we're going to have mail-checking and instant messaging support in
gnome-shell, it'll be pretty important to have support for the
indicator/messaging-menu protocol, even if there's no "applet" support
per se.
What if the indicator-applet could be a notification/tray icon instead
of a legacy libpanel-applet2 applet? Is there anything about the
indicator-applet that would particular preclude this from happening?
Alternatively, does this need to be re-implemented in gnome-shell
directly?
