Title:
video apps using wrong xv overlay type in Unity 2D
Status in unity-2d package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
I have a Dell Mini 10v with Intel GMA 950 graphics. I'm running
Ubuntu 11.10.
My package version of xserver-xorg-video-intel is
2:2.15.901-1ubuntu2.1
I changed from Unity 3D to 2D, and the performance of video playback
apps became very bad (adobe flash, vlc, mplayer, smplayer).
I found that xvinfo was listing two video overlay adpaters. The first
was "Textured Video" and the 2nd was "Video Overlay".
I assumed the problem was they were using "Textured Video" when they
should be using "Video Overlay".
I was able to tell smplayer and mplayer to use "Video Overlay", and
their performance returned to normal. I was not able to figure out
how to tell adobe flash or vlc which adapter to use.
My theory is that compiz in Unity 3D is acquiring exclusive use of the
"Textured Video" overlay, so that the apps don't try to use it. But
in Unity 2D metacity isn't using it, so the video playback apps
naively use the first available xv adapter they find.
I think the solution would be to change the driver to report the
"Video Overlay" adapter first and the "Textured Video" adapter second.
