I made easy test for packaging gcompris-9.6.1 with debian-directory from
Natty's version 9.3.

wget --no-check-certificate "https://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/gcompris/9.6.1/gcompris-9.6.1.tar.gz?r=&ts=1310889737&use_mirror=ignum"; -O gcompris-9.6.1.tar.gz
tar -xvf gcompris-9.6.1.tar.gz
apt-get source gcompris
cp -r gcompris-9.3/debian/ gcompris-9.6.1
cd gcompris-9.6.1
#Tune debian/changelog
dpkg-buildpackage
cd ..

#install
sudo dpkg -i gcompris-sound-en_9.6-1ubuntu1_all.deb gcompris-data_9.6-1ubuntu1_all.deb gcompris_9.6-1ubuntu1_*.deb

I also pushed it to my PPA: https://launchpad.net/~aapo-rantalainen/+archive/gcompris

#install (Karmic,Lucid,Maverick, Natty. There are building problem with Oneiric)
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:aapo-rantalainen/gcompris
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gcompris-sound-en

Which will then load also: gcompris gcompris-data
