It seems to be related with a QT_ACCESSIBiLITY bug:

I could reproduce the problem in lxde, unity 2d and unity 3d (12.04 up-
to-date 32 & 64 bit)

QT_ACCESSIBILITY=0 scribus

allways solves the problem.
