For some reason my comment above is truncated. This would be a nice addition to Granite and we should merge this now. The only suggestion I have is changing

>> public signal void icon_pressed (Gtk.Widget icon);

to

>> public signal void search_icon_pressed ();

or even

>> public signal void activated ();
