Start epoptes from the command line, e.g. from gnome-terminal.
When broadcasting, you'll see a port number in the terminal.
Try to telnet to that, from the clients.
Or if you see any errors, paste them here.

It's not using 5900 in order to allow multiple teachers broadcasting
from the same server to multiple classrooms in parallel (that's easily
done with e.g. ltsp fat clients as the teacher PCs).
