Here's what I've been talking about:

I switched the button implementations to normal GTK buttons (but sunken
in, so the look is really close). It's not done yet: need to create a
custom widget for the double forward arrow for the today button, but I
wanted to see if there's any interest in going this way before
proceeding. Comments welcome!
