chrismd changed the question status:
Sorry for letting this question expire, I have been extra busy lately. I
must say I am a bit confused by the intent of the feature, so if you
could explain your use case a little that might help.

Graphite is primarily used (to my knowledge) for monitoring. Thus it
makes sense for it's output to reflect reality as closely as possible
and to avoid hiding information from the user for the sake of making the
graphs prettier. If you have a graph that has gaps in it, it is
generally because the data is not being sent on the correct time
intervals or the data is simply not available and in either case my
assumption is that you would want the user to be aware of this so if
there is an actual problem it can be fixed. This same argument might be
made against the existing keepLastValue() function, except that for that
one I can think of a valid use cases.

That said, I think its best when users are free to use software as they
wish rather than being restricted by the intentions of the original
designer. It is entirely possible that there is a great use case for
this and I simply haven't thought of it. So if you have a use case where
this behavior makes sense (ie. something other than monitoring) and it
makes sense that other Graphite users would want it as well then I would
be glad to include the feature in the main branch.

Thanks.
