Luke Venediger confirmed that the question is solved:
So it turns out that my retention period was defaulting to 14 days, not
6 months as I'd expected. I had configured my retention periods based on
the statsd configuration guide, but didn't set up a 6 month retention
period for all metrics starting with stats_counts.  So the error was
being thrown because there was no date for the range I was specifying.

As an aside, it would be better for the API to return no data instead of
an exception.
