I have noticed two things:

1. when gmetad is writing RRD files in addition to sending them to
graphite I have an increase on carbon metricsRecv, and a decrease in
data lost.

2. changing gmetad collection time from 30 to 15 seconds makes graphite
work with no data lost (together with writing the rrds of course)
