Josh B confirmed that the question is solved:
OK I was able to determine that it's the presence of commas in the
variable names that prevented it from displaying in graphite-web.

I checked the documentation again, and it's not obvious that this is a
restriction.  Maybe it would be helpful to add a list of reserved
characters or something.

I suppose this doesn't come up much unless you're trying to migrate from
an existing homegrown solution like I am.
