You might want to make sure your webserver is allowed to follow
symlinks.

P.S. If you're not wedded to RRD, I'd suggest using collectd's
write_graphite plugin to send metrics directly to Carbon instead of
using RRD. Aside from the convenience of having everything in the same
Whisper format, RRD has a different "performance profile" than Whisper
when it comes to reads and writes, which IME makes it hard to scale them
both together on the same system.
