Gufw is just a User Interface to ufw. Gufw doesn't do any firewalling by
itself, it just is a graphical way to configure ufw. So, even if Gufw is
closed, the firewall always runs if you have told to do so using Gufw
(ie, if it's enabled and you close Gufw, the firewall is still enabled).

Therefore, this is in no way a security vulnerability.

  ability to have the program-icon in the menu next to the clock (in order
  to ensure that the program is running) disappeared. Is therefore
  uncertain whether the firewall is running.
  
  Would be glad if the error was fixed so I know that the firewall is
  running.

Status in GUI for ufw: Won't Fix

Bug description:
