On Dell XPS 15 (L502X) I think the HDMI output is connected to the nVidia 
card. Both nvidia and nouveau managed to do HDMI video, but none of them 
managed to do HDMI audio (I couldn't see the nVidia audio device in lspci, in 
Windows 7 it got "hot-plugged" when I connected a HDMI cable).

I don't have access to a HDMI display anymore, so I can't help testing.
